I follow the 600 mile oil change intervals and 1,800 valve inspection checks - no adjustments required so far. If you are an offroad Hero and mechanically inclined - get the KTM500. If you enjoy riding some technical offroad and want to focus on true dualsport and accumulate more miles over many years, get the CRF450L.
2009 450 EXC First Oil Change. Just dropped the oil for first time after just over 3 hours running time on new bike. I measured the amount of oil I got out (on the advice of kevinyorks) and only got 0.5L out of engine including what was in the oil filter and filter housing. The gearbox oil was just over 1L when drained and measured.
- I'm willing to push a KTM 500 exc to much longer service intervals, given that I'll not be racing (maybe 3-4,000 km per oil change) - I'm willing to, if reasonable weight, carry around a couple extra parts that might be known reliability points on the KTM - I don't want too much power on technical, off road riding, and ride relatively slowly
If you want something that will last (and has all the little bugs worked out), look at the Kawasaki KLR 650. Pretty much indestructible. If it's not aggressive enough for you, consider the Honda XR650L - also reliable as a pile of bricks. If that's not elite enough, a BMW F700GS (or 650) should do the trick.
Different service intervals may apply in your country, depending on the local operating conditions. Individual service intervals and scopes may change in the course of technical developments. The most up-to-date service schedule can always be found on KTM Dealer.net. Your authorized KTM dealer will be happy to advise you. Page 51: Recommended Work

For optimal performance and engine longevity, it is recommended to change the oil and oil filter on your KTM 450 EXC-F (2024) at regular intervals. Consult the manual to determine the manufacturer's recommended oil change frequency and the correct procedure to change the oil and replace the filter.
2023 Gas Gas 350. Manual says change oil after the first hour. Sounds good. Then it says the motorex synthetic 10w50 is recommended oil. Sweet. My question is, multiple dealers have said to run conventional oil for the first few hours (5-8) to finish the break in process.
In my opinion, changing the oil every 300kms ( 4 full days of non-competition riding ) is fine. Then every third oil change change the 2 filters and clean the 2 screens. I then do my valves every 4 months or so.
